The Earl sat beside me staring wide-eyed, smiling, shaking his head. He pushed at my arm. “Hawkeye, it’s time you woke up. Man, I gotta get goin’. It’s been a rare treat, but life must go on. I gotta go to the library. Study up on my Français. I know you don’t mind. You’re such an understanding soul.”

Well, that’s one way to kill an afternoon, I thought; rubbed my eyes; looked around. The bottle of Jack Daniels was gone, undoubtedly tucked away once again in some dark safe drawer. The room was empty and quiet. Just Barker and I together.

“Where’s Herb, Earl?” I asked in a tired mumble, my head aching.

“Oh, he split. Said he’d see you in the Gizmo. Yeah, he split about half an hour ago.”

I looked at my watch, saw that it was four o’clock, rubbed my eyes again and stood up. Time to go. Forget about Little Jim. Dead now. Hit by a car when he was fifteen. Forget everybody. To hell with Springfield. To hell with Cody and his weepy letter. Gotta meet Jesse.

I walked towards the door, pulled out a Kool, lit it with a weakly trembling hand. “You know, Earl, times just ain’t what they used to be.”

Barker laughed. “My God, Hawkeye, what a philosopher!”

“Yeah, that’s me. A dime-store Kierkegaard.”

“Well, adios, Hawkeye. Keep it loose, man.”

“Yeah,” I said, and shut the door.
